In spite of the fact that some try to label the Wii as "dated" hardware, the reality is that the Nintendo Wii has spurred more innovation in a few months than any other console has in decades. The Wii has offered us new and fresh ways to play videogames while the PS3 and 360 have offered up more of the same for yet another generation.
The type of amazing innovation that the Wii has encouraged can be exemplified by a little game called Let's Tap. It's a party game where you play by NOT touching the Wiimote - not directly anyway. You put the Wiimote on a box and tap on the box to play. How incredibly unique is that? Do you think that a game like this would have realized on the PS3? The 360? The PS2? It took what the industry largely viewed as a crazy, laughable console to bring about such fresh ideas.
Now playing a game by hitting something isn't new - There have been all type of bongo peripherals and all other type of specialized controllers - but playing a game with no special controllers and not even needing to touch the default controller is NEW. It's real innovation in an industry that has turned innovation into nothing more than a yearly or generational update in graphics and processing power.
Let's Tap may end up being a really bad game, and the tapping mechanic might not even work properly. In fact I'm not even interested in buying or playing the game at all. However, none of that changes the fact that Let's Tap is a true kind of innovation we have not seen in a long time, and it was only made possible by the Wii.
