Star Wars Original Trilogy Limited Release Starts Today

posted 12 September 2006, Tuesday

Today Stores will begin selling the original Star Wars trilogy in individual packages for a limited 3 month window. Those who didn't want to dish out $80 for the complete set of all six movies can now get the first three movies on their own. The key feature of this DVD set is the inclusion of the very much desired original theatrical versions of the movies on what is being called the "bonus disk".

After much debate I have decided NOT to get these because 1) I already have them on DVD no thanks to George Lucas and 2) I really don't want to give George any more money for what is the most re-released movies in history. Adding to that is the fact that George for a long time refused to give us fans the original movies claiming everything from the movies being destroyed to his desire for continuity. This effort by Lucas is frankly too little, too late. It is clear that Lucas despises his original Star Wars movies, and the fact that he delegated the theatrical versions to mere bonus material highlights it rather well. I just finished watching all three original theatrical releases and I just can't understand why Lucas hates them so much. Yeah, the movies are old, and lack all of the bells and whistles of today's movies, but that is no reason to snuff them out of existence.

I may buy these when they go down in price, but I'm not in a rush. Everything about George Lucas and Star Wars says that in spite of the "limited release" warnings there will be another re-release of Star Wars some time in the future. Maybe one of these days Lucas will get it right and honor his original movies the way they deserve to be.
