Review Legend

posted 1 August 2007, Wednesday

I've posted quite a few reviews here, but I've never really explained how I go about doing it or what my numbers mean. I think it's important to know since different people use different scales and even the same scales can mean different things. The most used system is the scholastic system where a 90 or 9/10 is an A and anything below a 60 or 6/10 is an F. This is one of the reasons major sites don't give low scores because a 6/10 is a low score for them. Anyway I won't pretend to understand all the grading systems out there so I'll just give you mine which is simply a ten scale where every number matters.

10/10 - Classic

9/10 - Excellent

8/10 - Great

7/10 - Good

6/10 - Okay

5/10 - Mediocre

4/10 - Bad

3/10 - Horrible

2/10 - Atrocious

1/10 - Unplayable

Both the 5 and 6 rating are indicative of the average. 5 is a low average and 6 is a high average. There's a clear distinction between the two, but just know that that's where my average for games falls.

No one is free from bias which is why I have included my unique bias system which lets you know how I feel about particular aspects of the game like it's genre, franchise history or price tag. If I don't like the genre the game is in I will openly tell you my bias by including a descriptor under my score like this: (Genre Bias -). The minus sign tells you that I have a negative bias towards the game's genre. On the other hand if I have a positive bias I will tell you by naming the bias and including a plus sign after it like this: (Genre Bias +). Every reviewer has a bias, the difference with my reviews is that I try to be open and honest about it. That way you know where I'm coming from and maybe can get a better idea of how I formed my opinion.

I'll also break down the game into pros and cons as best as I can because I feel that breaking the game down that way helps objectivity and helps readers better understand  the game and how I feel about it.

I will break games down into four difficulty levels:

Easy - Medium - Hard - Extreme

and I will use one or any combination of them to explain how difficult I feel the game is. Games that offer the option of difficulty levels will be labeled as Variable difficulty

Finally, the score I give a game is not an average.
