Earthbound ESRB Rated for Wii VC

posted 8 May 2008, Thursday

There has been a murmuring across the net these past few days by a pitifully small amount of gamers who are lucky enough to remember a game by the name of Earthbound: a game so extraordinary, so classic that Nintendo has seen fit to lock it away in the bowels of their videogame hell and make sure it stays there by squashing any sliver of hope that would indicate a re-release to the public. However, after many years and a campaign by those dedicated men of the stars there is a small, incredibly small possibility that Earthbound might see the light of day again on the Wii's Virtual Console.

I am not very familiar with the tyrannical Nintendo of old with it's bosses who were so heavy handed and ruthless that they probably would have been more comfortable presiding over a den of Yakuza than a videogame company, but their legacy lives on in Nintendo's continued dismissal and apathy towards the very gamers that love them. Nintendo has never really seemed to care about their customer's opinions so it's no surprise that the relentless years of badgering by those found at Starmen.net has done little to sway the giant, but there is that glimmer of hope that showed up on the ESRB page a few days ago.

Even with a rating there is no reason to get excited and believe that Nintendo's greatest RPG franchise will ever see the light of day. Nintendo has already proven that ESRB ratings for VC games don't mean anything as multiple games have been rated only to disappear again. Those who have been waiting years to see this game can only hope that Nintendo will listen to it's gamers at least once and release this masterpiece.

If the miracle happens and Earthbound does get released on the Virtual Console I plan to do something special. More importantly I hope that any gamer who likes RPG games would buy it and give Nintendo a reason to bring the series back from is shameful obscurity.

I would be very suprised if this happens but it could be a landmark, first Earthbound then we might see Super Mario RPG! Then I'd be happy!
