5 Myths about Wii Storage

posted 3 May 2008, Saturday

The amount of FUD and outright disinformation about the Wii's storage solution being propagated by gamers and the gaming press is astounding. It's so bad that the people who are actually informed about what the Wii can actually do in this regard seem few and far between. I know this is the internet and everything, but if you are going to talk about Wii storage at least have some idea of what you're talking about.

Here are 5 of the biggest myths about the Wii's storage structure:

5. Wii storage is a major problem
While highly subjective I think any reasonable person will say that Wii storage is anything but a major problem. Some have gone as far as to equate Wii storage to Microsoft's high rate of system failure for their 360. It's ridiculous how some people can turn a personal preference into a major system failing event. Iwata said it best when he characterized it as an inconvenience to a small minority of gamers.

4.  Reading/Writing to the SD card is slow
Reading and writing from an SD card is not slow. Anyone who has played a Wii game that uses custom MP3 songs or other content would know this. The reason people believe it's slow is because of Nintendo's encryption of Virtual Console games when backing them up. The process of encryption is slow, and it's something Nintendo can and should fix. SD card access is the same speed as any other SD card slot in any other device.

3. VC & Wiiware will fail if something is not done
This is a myth because  the Virtual Console and Wiiware services have already launched and are already successful.  According to Nintendo companies are so impressed with sales that they are already making sequels to their Wiiware games. The idea that a small group of whiny gamers who refuse to buy more digital games without a hard drive can disrupt Nintendo's already massive sales is crazy.

2. Wii cannot do downloadable content
The Wii can and has done DLC. Just see Super Smash Brothers. People keep citing Rock Band as proof of this myth without realizing that the game was never going to take advantage of the Wii's capabilities since it was a bad port. Purchased DLC can also be done off an SD card, but Nintendo will have to come up with some way to keep gamers from just copying it for their friends (piracy).

1. The Wii has no storage solution
This is the most ridiculous of all the myths and it boggles the mind. I've seen one gamer admit to backing up his VC games then turn right around and claim that their is no storage solution. What? Backing up your games to an SD card IS the storage solution. People who want a Wii hard drive have incredibly brainwashed people into believing that once your Wii memory is full you're screwed. It's not true. Nintendo gave us the ability to backup our games to an SD card and while it can be improved it works well. You can even re-download your games as often as you like.

Some people would like the Wii to have a hard drive, and I can understand that. However, people have turned that personal preference into a massive FUD campaign against the Wii instead of adapting or just dumping the console altogether. I've said it before, but if deleting or backing up your games is too much trouble for you then you really need to do some introspection because something is wrong with you.

I agree that it's subjective (Wii Storage). But then it is subjectively a major problem for me. I have alot of content to swap and the encryption process is so slow it's aggravating. A wii hard drive would be great, but I fear it's going to be a propriotery product.

The ability to use any USB 2 hard drive or flash drive should be a given. Additionally, I think the encryption should be alot faster, if not simplified to a point where it only changes the header of the file (therefore taking only a few seconds to encrypt). If nintendo REALLY wants to stop VC and WiiWare pirating, they should realize that anyone who really wants to pirate something will. The slow encryption is really just 'keeping honest players honest' and ruining things for everyone.
