Nintendo Media Conference - Silence Speaks Loudest

posted 15 April 2008, Tuesday

Well the embargo on the Nintendo media conference has been lifted and after sifting through all the info and opinions I have to say that the most significant thing to come out of that conference was Nintendo's ridiculous and continued amount of secrecy. Wiiware is set to launch next month, NEXT MONTH, and yet when asked by Chris Kohler no one was allowed to give him information on how big their games were, how much they would cost or when they would be launching. Ridiculous? Absolutely!

Nintendo has always been a secretive company, but since the Wii has launched they've entered an information lock down mode that would make the people at Fort Knox question their security measures. If we can't have detailed information about a game a mere month before it is available to purchase then when the hell can we have it? This flies in the face of any sort of reason or sense. There's even a rumor that Nintendo's little talked about game Disaster: Day of Crisis is already finished even though they've said absolutely nothing about it.

I don't know what the hell is going on over at Nintendo, but this ridiculous amount of secrecy can only be bad for them in the long run - if not for their business surely for their reputation (which hasn't been too good anyway). Some speculate that the secrecy is an effort to curb negative opinion about their new casual direction. Some think it's because Nintendo doesn't want the competition stealing their stuff. All I know is that it sucks and it needs to stop. Not giving basic info on a game a month before release is unacceptable. Period.

Nintendos silence toward their upcoming games has always been annoying, to say the least. But it definately adds to the hype. The Wii was so damned hyped because no one knew anything about it. Thats also the reason red steel was hyped, dispite being a normal fps with sword play. While it would be nice to have more information, i dont see it happening. Nintendo is 1 generation behind in online play, so it lacks much expierence in that area. Besides, bad habits die hard.
