Disclaimer: The following is my personal opinion. It does not reflect Capcom's corporate stance on the Wii.
The direction the conversation has been going in this thread, it's almost turning into a form of the PS3/360 exclusivity discussion, where someone always ends up angry either when a game is exclusive to a platform, or when a game goes multi-platform.
My take on the situation? When I bought the Wii, I had very specific expectations on the games that I was going to play it. I knew what I was buying; I was purchasing a "party game" machine for my friends and I to play. I knew this and I expected this. Sure, I own a bunch of single player games such as Super Paper Mario, Resident Evil 4, Zelda and Mario Galaxy, but I have almost never touched them. The only time the Wii gets powered up is when friends are over.
In contrast, the PS360 are consoles that have logged plenty of time on single player games for me.
The situation here, in my opinion, is that each machine is good at certain aspects of gaming and has its place. You can't expect to get everything on one console. Well, you can expect it, but you're not gonna get it.
Think of it as buying a cheap car. It does what the core purpose of a car is for well, which is transportation from point A to point B, but it lacks the features of a luxury car. For example, your cheap car might only seat 2, while a luxury SUV might seat 6.
In a way, consoles are the same. The Wii does what consoles do well, which is allows the consumer to play software on it and have some fun. Yet it lacks "luxury" features that other consoles have, such as HD.
This makes total sense. As pointed out by others, not every game fits on every console, because that's just not its style. For example, why settle for less from a game on the Wii when it can obviously benefit from having HD graphics? The converse is also true. In a game where graphics might not matter, why settle for a game on the PS360 if the game simply controls better or more intuitively on a Wii?
Going back to the car analogy, you don't knowingly buy a car that seats 2 and then suddenly expect it seat 6 comfortably. Sure, you could stuff 4 people in the trunk, and theoretically seat 6, but that's not the best place for them. Similarly, sure, the Wii could have all the games that the PS360 has. You can downgrade the graphics and do the work to make all the games work on the Wii. No one is denying that, but where is the best console for that game?
Want an even better analogy? You don't get knowingly get a Mac and expect to get Windows PC support and vice versa (Leave Boot Camp out for the sake of discussion). Mac users have never had the software that Windows users have had, and have always had choices which were more limited. They purchase Macs knowing these factors, and they live with it.
When it comes down to it, really, the only thing lacking on the Wii is some processing power and HD graphics. If the Wii was the only console on the market, then it wouldn't matter, but unfortunately, it's not.
I said it before, and I'll say it again. Like the PS360 battles, it seems to me that people are trying to justify their choice of console purchases, and are clamoring for various game titles in order to do so. Nobody wants to seem as they have made the wrong choice. There are many more examples of having to make tough choices and hard sacrifices for other things. Gaming consoles are just another one in a long list. There's market segmentation for everything else, why can't that exist for consoles? - Lost, Capcom Community Specialist
I posted a response to this utterly ridiculous tripe. Here it is in Red:
"When I bought the Wii, I had very specific expectations on the games that I was going to play it. I knew what I was buying; I was purchasing a "party game" machine for my friends and I to play."
In spite of your low opinion of the Wii the FACT is that it's not a party machine. It's not a kiddie console. It's a videogame console that was designed to be more accessible than the other guys.
Why that is a bad thing only the elitist "harcorz" will ever know or understand because it doesn't make a bit of sense to hate on a machine that more people can play instead of less. If Capcom want's to make money doesn't it want a console with more people playing it?
As pointed out by others, not every game fits on every console, because that's just not its style. The Wii's demographic is everyone. Not just casuals, not just kiddies. The fact that capcom's millions sellers on the Wii are hardcore speaks to this truth. And let's not forget that for a console to be market leader it has to sell to more than just the "hardcore elite". PS1 had casual games, PS2 had casual games. Hell, PS3 and 360 have casual games. Is Capcom going to pull support for them because of it?
Mac users have never had the software that Windows users have had, and have always had choices which were more limited.Do you want to know why Mac doesn't get the same support as Win? It's because Win is the market leader and thus gets the most support.
And guess what? The Wii is the fastest selling console in gaming history and the market leader. Never in the history of gaming has the market leader gotten the worst support, yet you are trying to justify just that idea. You are wrong and the Wii should be getting the best games not the scraps.
When it comes down to it, really, the only thing lacking on the Wii is some processing power and HD graphics. Two things that have no bearing on how fun or well made a game is.
If the Wii was the only console on the market, then it wouldn't matter, but unfortunately, it's not.No, it's not the only console, but it's the market leader and it should be treated as such.
Maybe, or maybe they are wondering why companies don't want to give the #1 console the best games.
it seems to me that people are trying to justify their choice of console purchases
You know, all of your anti-wii justifying falls flat on its face when you look at the PS3 before it launched. Everyone thought that it was going to be the market leader and so they started making their best games for it (RE5). They were following the standard method of operations that they've followed for generations. Now Wii is #1 and you're telling us that the PS3, the loser of this generation, should still get the best games while the Wii gets garbage. I wonder if you even realize what you are saying.
It's amazing that the hardcore elitists want to suddenly, for the first time in history, screw the market leader and give all the best games to 2nd and 3rd place. It's unprecedented and insulting to Wii gamers. That's why they ask their questions and that's why they are angry.
And although you have a disclaimer I have no doubt that you are expressing the feelings of many in the videogame industry. The way you and Sven play the Wii down every chance you get is incredibly telling. I mean, Sven saying that he is merely "cautiously optimistic" about the market leader speaks volumes for Capcom's low opinion of the Wii. However, you or the other companies don't have to say anything since actions speak louder than words and we see the games the Wii is getting.
This is the type of shitty elitist attitude that has the Wii, the #1 market leading console, being treated like a piece of shit while the PS360 gets all the best games. It makes no sense, and as I pointed out above has never been done before. Yet for some reason companies like Capcom don't want to play by the same rules they've been playing by for the last 20 years. They gave the PS2 the best games, they gave the PS1 the best games, but now they refuse to do the same for Wii.
The problem is that stupid people are in charge. Now your responce was
completely reasonable, and adressed many good points, but i dont see many
companies changing their philosophy in the near future. Spending big bucks
on graphical "HIGH END" games that dont sellout well eventually bankrupt
the company. I see much 3rd party support for the wii in 1-2 years, but it
should take so damn long for major companies to join the band wagon. Its
ultametly cheaper and more profitable to develop for wii, and thats a fact.
