Nintendo Jacks Up Virtual Console Prices

posted 1 October 2007, Monday

One thing I don't see Nintendo getting enough criticism for, and for the life of me I don't understand why, is their insane Virtual Console prices. Even more mind boggling is how so many gamers are more than happy to pay $10 for 10-year-old games that you don't really own and that you can find for $2 in a used game bin. In any case Nintendo has seen that their gamers are more than happy to get FUTA and have started raising the prices of the VC games.

Released today was Sin & Punishment a shooter that had never been released outside of Japan before and because of that Nintendo thinks it's A-Okay to charge $2 extra over the already high $10 N64 VC price. Nintendo calls it "import week" - I call it a rip-off. Still gamers are flocking to the VC and buying up any old, poorly emulated game and paying whatever Nintendo asks. This is bad, and if the trend continues expect to see prices go even higher.

The VC wouldn't be as bad if Nintendo gave out free points for registering games or if stores offered free points as incentives like they do with Xbox games, but they don't. VC games have to be puchased completely out-of-pocket and that is just another big reason to avoid them.
