Nintendo Not Likely to Approve AO Games - Ever!

posted 1 July 2007, Sunday

Wii welcomes games rated E, T and M. We haven't approved AO-rated games. I doubt we ever will. What Rockstar has right now is a game rated outside our spectrum, outside any manufacturer's spectrum. - Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo

Since the Wii launched Nintendo has been trumpeting their "broad audience" mantra high and low celebrating the fact that senior citizens as well as children can enjoy the Wii. But apparently the word "broad" doesn't include adults who enjoy... well... adult content. You know, your typical horror movie gore fests or your erotic thrillers. Nintendo is for everyone EXCEPT those people. Those dirty, nasty filthy people.

What's more is that according to Reggie Nintendo WILL NEVER cater to these adults. No matter how "broad" or "inclusive" Nintendo attempts to be in the future they will always alienate and turn their back on this "adult" demographic.

The hypocrisy is so thick you can cut it with a knife - So are the lies and double talk. I'm curious to know when the so-called videogame media are going to call out not only Nintendo, but all console makers and ask them why they keep touting mature games for mature gamers but refuse to actually, physically support mature games for mature gamers. Nintendo can talk about their "broad audience" all day, but when is someone going to ask Reggie why his definition of "broad" doesn't include the perfectly legit AO rating from the ESRB? If no one is going to support it why not just rename it to BA for Banned?

This issue is incredibly serious, and I can't understand why so many gamers and the so-called videogame media are apathetic to this crisis. Every videogame publication should be all over Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft's asses for all of their lies and contradictions on this issue. I'm not kidding when I say this is a crisis. All of the naysayers who are badmouthing Rockstar now and blowing this off are going to be pissing their pants and crying like little girls when the ESRB sets their sights on their favorite franchise. And if we continue to let censorship like this happen you better believe that it will.
