How much would you pay for a Wii?

posted 15 May 2006, Monday

With the price of the PS3 confirmed the speculators have turned to the Wii trying to figure out just how much Nintendo will charge for their self-proclaimed gaming revolution. The average price estimates have been between $199 and $250, but is that a good price for the Wii? Nintendo could charge $300 and still be cheaper than Microsoft and Sony, but is the Wii worth that much?

As far as specs are concerned the Wii is about as powerful as an Xbox, but with no hard drive and a new-fangled controller that is yet to be put to the test. So how much is too much? Personally I think that $150 is a fair price to ask for last generation hardware in a next generation package, but when has Nintendo ever been fair when it comes to pricing? I'm not going to sit here and guess how much Nintendo will charge for the Wii, but don't be surprised if it's something ridiculous - like $300 ridiculous. Nintendo charged almost $100 for their games back in the day so don't expect Nintendo to go easy.

However, anything is possible, and with Nintendo playing the waiting game to see how gamers react to the other guy's price points who knows what will happen. All I know is that Nintendo is known for charging as much as they can for rehashed hardware and software (DS Lite anyone?), so don't go thinking that the Wii is going to be a bargain just yet.

I expect no less than $200. Every Nintendo console has launched at that price I believe, as far back as the NES.

To answer the question posed in your title, though, I would pay maybe $100, depending on the games. So far nothing has really caught my eye. I'm certainly not sold on the controller, either, so I see myself waiting on the inevitable price drop.
