The lastest Wii update brought some good improvemets, but unfortunately it also made some bad changes. The most notable is the fact that Nintendo has changed their terms of service to include the unauthorized modification or updating of your Wii console.
We may without notifying you, download updates, patches, upgrades and similar software to your Wii Console and may disable unauthorized or illegal software placed on your Wii Console to ensure that your Wii Console is operating properly and efficiently, comply with applicable laws, assist law enforcement, protect us and our customers, or prevent the use and distribution of software obtained through improper channels.
I have always recommended Wii owners to turn off Standby mode because of the unnecessary heat generated by the Wii attempting to connect to the internet, but now I VERY STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU TURN OFF STANDBY MODE just in case Nintendo tries to follow through and modify your Wii without your permission.
I don't know the legalities of all this, but I didn't agree to this and I sure as hell don't authorize Nintendo to modify anything without my permission. I simply updated my Wii - nothing more. We'll see where this goes because TOS agreements are usually very anti-consumer and oftentimes don't hold up to legal scrutiny when taken to court.
It's funny how companies don't give consumers features they want then go crazy trying to stop hackers from implementing those features they should have given us in the first place.
Homebrew gives us a lot of great things. Dvd playback, region free gameing,
etc. Thats not the bigeest problem obviously. Its the piracy that comes
along with somthing like this. Homebrew can also give you free VC games,
and tell me how Nintendo is supposed to make money that way? I agree that
Nintendo SHOULDNT do anything to your Wii that you do not autherize, but i
belief even strong that piracy need to stop.
