Happy Birthday Star Wars!

posted 25 May 2007, Friday

Today marks the 30th Anniversary of the first Star Wars film, A New Hope, the film which started a Sci-fi revolution that is still going strong today. I still get chills when I hear the opening music for the SW movies, and I could watch the Original Trilogy a million times over. In fact I'm going to watch it this weekend in a day long SW fest.

I don't know where I'd be without SW which has molded and shaped a lot of my creativity and imagination. To me Star Wars is the greatest sci-fi universe because in spite of the awesome introduction by the OT there is still tons of potential and stories waiting to be discovered. It's kind of like an unfinished masterpiece that you can't help but want to go back and explore.

It's unfortunate that after 30 years we still only have three REAL SW movies, but in a way things are better like that. It's the whole unfinished masterpiece thing. I'm sure we'll get a couple more SW movies, since Lucas isn't done milking his baby, but to me the book on SW has been officially closed and the original three movies are all that matter towards the REAL SW story. Lucas can make all the extra SW movies he wants, but he officially ended the REAL SW when he decided to deviate from his original story and ideas with the prequels.

In spite of the sour note, I still am up for most things Star Wars and some new movies would be a refreshing departure from the constant stream of Hollywood garbage being flung at us - namely in the form of comic book movies. If anything SW is a reminder of how movies have sunk to such depressing levels. So pick yourself this weekend, watch some Star Wars and celebrate the beginning of the greatest sci-fi universe ever made. And don't forget to check out my SW fan fiction!
