Gamespot Bumps GTA 4 Review Score

posted 29 April 2008, Tuesday

Can you tell the difference between the two pictures above? In the first pic Gamespot rated GTA 4 a 9.5 and in the second pic the score has mysteriously been bumped to a full 10. The obvious question is why did this happen?

I know most gamers don't give a shit about ethics and the videogame press, but if you can't appreciate what's going on here then something is seriously wrong with you. Now I can't officially say what caused this change, but given Gamespot's record of pandering to videogame publishers and firing their own employees for not giving high enough scores what do you think is going on here? It's insane!

Now I love the GTA franchise. I'd go as far as saying that it's my favorite franchise ever. However, the hype and bullshit reviews surrounding this game are making me sick. Not that reviews for a huge game like this really matter, but to put it bluntly many of the reviews for this game are bought and paid for in some way and are far from honest. I've always said that major AAA games never get bad scores and this game is the perfect example of why that is.

Very sad. I am a member of GameSpot, and it is a shame that the website has acquired a lot notoriety on the internet. Hopefully they will be able to redeem themselves.

Gamespot always gives other games crap about not being original or fresh, and this is tyipicaly worse with sequels. Now i havent played gta4, but what the hell would make it so damn revoulutionary and different to desserve a gamespot 10? If someone can prove me wrong and tell me a good reason how it differentients itself from the other gta games, then please tell me. Otherwise this is just another cheap sellout like skrubking said.

this is an official post froma gamespot rep on the ps3 forums as to their reasonf or changing the scrore..

"Rather than claiming bias or money, I can tell you the reason for the score "bump" was simple.

The 9.5 was a red herring to see how people would react. Sure enough, people flipped out over it not getting a 10, and people are still angry that the score was "changed." The real score was 10, and if they felt it was a 9.5, it would have stayed that way. Whenever there's a change in the score or review, there's a note explaining why. In this case, everyone got duped when they put a 9.5 up."

Anyone but this?? Didn't think so.

Kane and Lynch is not a well known AAA franchise. I'm talking about big, popular games like GTA, Halo, Super Mario.

The fact is that franchises like that have a massive following and the last thing big review sites that rely on advertising want to do is piss off the fans who give them hits or sales. No big site wants to see their traffic take a major hit because one of their staff didn't like a major uber popular game. That's just the way it is.

@Swatpup Thanks for the Gamespot update.

"We never posted a review with the score of 9.5. What you saw was a bug that sometimes causes scores to appear on the site before reviews go live. Sometimes that score is correct, sometimes it isn't. In this case, it wasn't."

Two reasons? ...What? There's something going on here...

Those are bull shit excuses, a glitch that displays wrong numbers? Then it would be somthing like 12846859, not a solid 9.5.

Aparently TP wasnt revoulutionary enough to resieve a 10, or even a 9, which is back to my point, what the hell is so damn different in gta4 from other gta games to make it a 10? Whats so revolutionary? Dont ssay the multiplayer, cuz thats not enough. Im sure gta4 is a great game, but a 10? Come on.

Hear hear, my friend! The game doesn't look atrocious by any stretch of the imagination, but it's nothing we haven't seen before. And besides, it's been done far better in the form of Oblivion. Reviews are acting like this is the first free-roaming world game of all time, much less the first great one. Gamespot has lost all credibility, it's true. So have a LOT of gaming sites now, all of which were pandering enough to give GTAIV ridiculously good reviews.

GTAIV is just another example of wash, rinse, repeat modern gaming conventions, all done in gray/pale green/brown shades of dull color. The fact that a game features *gasp*multiplayer*doublegasp* does not a great game make. I'll reserve full judgement for when I play it, but from the get-go, I've never been fond of the look, style, or overall outlook of the game.

First, this score change is ridiculous, GS should be ashamed. Second it's not worth ten. It is fantastic, the best GTA yet, and utterly engrossing, but no, as you say Voltaire, it is not that revolutionary. 10 would imply perfection, and I've found several flaws in the 20 odd hours I've already spent with it. That said, I'm not bad mouthing it, it is excellent, and 100 times more deserving of the hype than Assassin's Creed. But I'm a firm believer that perfect scores should never really be given out. Especially as a bump. It just discourages further creativity.
