EA Store Extended Download Service - IE Major Ripoff

posted 4 March 2008, Tuesday

I've been telling you guys since forever that digital distribution is nothing but a way for game makers to charge more money for less game. Well, here is yet another example that proves my point - Electronic Arts extended download service. What is it you ask? Well after you've paid full price for your videogame and download it from the EA store you only have a small 6 month window to download it again. However, for the low, low price of $5.99 EA will give you an extension and allow you to re-download your game up to 2 years later. Great deal huh? Um, no.

EA is basically forcing you to pay more if you want to have the same luxuries hard copy owners have - you know, the luxury of installing or uninstalling a game off your HD whenever you want. With their digital distribution you are forced to keep the game on your hard drive and if you uninstall, get a virus or your PC crashes you have to buy the game at full price all over again. You pay more money - you get less than before.

Other digital distribution models, like Steam, don't go to these lengths to utterly ripoff, dare I say steal, money from you, but they are still all bad since digital distribution is still all bad. Digital distribution sucks folks. It sucks hard. Sadly, gamers keep buying games this way and it appears to be the inevitable future which may ultimately cause me to quit gaming forever.
